Why a Regular Season NBA Game will Always Rule Over Superbowl Sunday.
February 5th 2007 13:32
Sunday is traditionally a quiet day in the NBA because it’s kind of
pointless trying to compete against the omnipresent NFL, with today being especially so, due to a little football contest known as the Superbowl. You may have heard of it.
So, with that being the case one would reasonably expect the scrub teams to feature prominently but this is far from the truth. LeBron James, Rip Hamilton, Chris Bosh anyone?
Since this site is all about basketball this writer would state categorically that NBALOUD would be happier watching a regular season contest between the Memphis Grizzlies and Boston Celtics any day of the week, rather than watching the Superbowl. Peyton Manning doesn’t have anything over Pau Gasol. Tank Johnson? Puh-lease I can watch Sebastian Telfair pull the same tricks!
To put it bluntly we love this game!
Yes, people actually paid attention to the basketball today when all the talk was about a garish football and commercial spectacle. Who gets excited about ads? And did anyone actually see the lousy weather in Miami today? Fickle weather sports fans won’t ever have the elements affect their NBA watching comfort because the games are indoors which is nice and cosy!
Furthermore, the NFL gets a free pass by the press and sports fans in the States – a player gets stomped on the head with football spikes and barely an audible whimper is heard from the media. Tank Johnson has to get Court approval to go Miami for the Superbowl. Is anything written about that? Nope, its media day and they’re all focused on each other.
Two African-American coaches being represented in the Superbowl – this ‘newsworthy’ item wouldn’t get any coverage in the Association because of its forward thinking coaching and management practices for minorities. There is a law in the NFL stating that at least one minority should be interviewed because legal action was being threatened by the late Johnny ‘if the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit’ Cochran a few years back.
Fights break out in the NFL and NHL but on the rare occasion it does in the NBA it’s a ‘thug’ league full of big scary African-Americans. Yes, there is an underlying prejudice that is inherent in this criticism that belies the real motives of this line of denunciations of the NBA.
NBALOUD never intended this posting to be a defence and spiel for the Association but why shouldn’t we have a bit of a rant? NBA basketball is glorious with many athletes from across the globe representing themselves and the places of their births with skill and passion. Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzki, Luol Deng, Steve Nash aren’t just names of basketball players but men that would never consider the NFL as a viable option.
With all of this being said we this writer does celebrate the win of Peyton Manning and Co. whilst feeling lousy for Brian Urlacher and the scapegoat for all of Chicago’s ills Rex Grossman.
Still, we’ll take the NBA over the Superbowl on any given Sunday.
