The Fight for the Final Western Conference Playoff Spot Heats Up.
April 14th 2007 10:47
Forget films like The Sixth Sense, The Crying Game or even
The Empire Strikes Back for an exciting climatic finale. Just turn your attention towards the Western Conference playoff battle for the eighth and final spot for a shock to the system. Can Kobe take the Lakers to the promised land? Is B. Diddy ready once again to display his wares during the postseason? Or, is Elton Brand going to turn the name ‘Elton Brand’ into a viable, er, brand?
Only time will tell.
Beginning with what was on paper a truly beguiling game involving two leading MVP candidates in Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant which saw one player solidify is MVP credentials, while the other tanked. Who? Keep on reading my dear and wonderful reader.
Phoenix managed to win their 60th game of the season on the back of a ‘wonder’ performance from ‘Stevie’ while the opposing superstar had a shooting night to forget. Final result: the Suns over the Lakers, 93-85.
Nash, had 26 points and 14 assists and was the life preserver in a sinking ship for Phoenix who were struggling with their shooting in the final period to leave the door ajar for a Los Angeles win. However, Kobe Bryant helped the Phoenix cause by going ice cold after a 50 point game in their previous match-up against the Clippers. Kobe ended up with 17 points in an ugly 7-for-26 shooting display.
Perhaps the worst aspect in all of this was Bryant had 11 after one quarter. Ouch!
This result is bad for the Lakers because their two main contenders for the final playoff spot notched up wins today to turn the screws on the team from Hollywood.
One of the rivals for the Lakers is their often overlooked sibling, the Clippers, who did their playoff prospects no harm beating the Trailblazers, 107-89.
Cuttino Mobley and Elton Brand led the way for the Clippers with a 22 point, six rebounds and
seven assists performance from Cuttino. While, Elton ‘don’t you dare say my last name is John’ Brand chipped in with a 20 points and seven rebounds super effort.
That is just super terrific guys!
Los Angeles got a further boost from Corey Maggette and Chris Kaman who scored 17 apiece in their beat down of a young Trailblazers squad.
The final contender for the eighth seed out West is the G-State Warriors who outlasted their Northern Cal rivals the Sacramento Kings, 125-108.
Baron Davis on his birthday scored 25 points and Stephen ‘too much action’ Jackson dropped 26 to pace the Warriors.
Sacramento who for so long had the bragging rights all over their neighbours now have to be as submissive as a gimp in an S&M party.
In summary, the Lakers right as of this moment holds the seventh spot with a 40-40 record, the Clippers have the eighth and final position with a 39-40 record and finally the Warriors have the exact same record as the Clips but are in the ninth place on the virtue that LAC have a better record when these two teams have met during the season.
To put it succinctly this race is too close to call.
The potential thorn to Kevin Durant’s side as the number one pick in the upcoming draft is super frosh Greg Oden from Ohio State. Oden’s dad recently stated to a paper that his son will indeed be turning pro. So, today’s clip is one involving both Kevin Durant and Greg Oden in last year’s All-American High School game. Watch the future of the NBA in awe!
