Gilbert Arenas to Leave Washington? NBA Player Fails to Register as Sex Offender.
June 10th 2007 14:19
On the eve of Game 2 of the NBA Finals there really isn’t anything to write about besides the latest news and rumours floating around the Association. Plus, NBALOUD is currently distracted with the battle royale happening in Paris at this very moment between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Oooh, the excitement! Let’s go the Fed Express.
Anyway, tennis is reserved for another space because it’s all about basketball here at NBALOUD.
We’ll begin with the biggest news item outside of the Finals that has been making the rounds of late involving Gilbert Arenas who has stated his desire to leave Washington when he has the chance to opt out of his contract next season. Agent Zero has expressed his wish to stay in Washington and that his decision is strictly business based, rather than a need to leave D.C. “I'm not looking at anything else. It's just business. If something happens where they don't want me or they're going in a different direction, I can look elsewhere. But my intentions are not to leave.” (Yahoo! Sports, 2007)
Agent Zero may be a lot of things but stupid isn’t one of them – Gilbert recognises that the most the Wizards could offer him this summer is a three year extension worth ‘only’ $60 to $70 million. If Arenas opts out of his contract he would be able to sign a max deal that could potentially net him between $90 to $100 million.
As an aside how wild is it when we write about the contracts of star athletes that deal with such astronomical figures in such a dispassionate manner? In a world where the minimum wage has barely risen in two decades and the majority of the world’s population struggle on less than $US2 a day here we are talking about a guy who throws a ball through a metal ring being ‘underpaid’ at $70 million. Outrageous!
Now that the daily vent component is over and done with let us continue on with more NBA news.
In not so savoury news Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith was injured in a car accident today when the SUV he was driving collided with another vehicle. Apparently Smith ignored a stop sign and the other car that was involved in the accident, which had the right of way, crashed into Smith’s car throwing him and the other occupants out of the SUV.
All are reported to be fine.
Moving on to more not-so-positive NBA news Milwaukee Bucks forward Ruben Patterson was fined $1000 for failing to register as a sex offender when he moved into a new neighbourhood.
Patterson, pleaded no contest to the charge and the judge gave Ruben the maximum fine allowable. The case was bought to light after a complaint from a nosey neighbour.
The fine stems from Patterson’s time with the Portland Trailblazers, or as they were more popularly known back then, the Jailblazers, when he entered a modified guilty plea to third-degree attempted rape for allegedly forcing his children’s nanny to perform oral sex acts on him.
Phew, after all of that NBALOUD can categorically say that this space is looking forward to tomorrow’s game. Bring it on!
Oh, one last thing aller Federer!
Today’s video is of the top 10 dunks from the season. Some mighty fine jams in this clip.
