NBA Loud - by Rick Gillispie

The NBA Has Turned Into a Bizzaro World!

November 7th 2006 07:59
If the situation of the opening week continues on for the rest of the season we’re all heading towards one of the most unpredictable and wild seasons ever in
What would Bizzaro Superman think of the NBA season so far? (Image from wikipedia)
NBA history. Night is day, up is down, left is right, dude looks like a lady etc. The good teams look bad and the bad teams look good! The defending champions the Miami Heat have been indifferent at best, while the run and gun Phoenix Suns have lost three of its first four games.

You’d imagine that the cream will rise to the top but what if it doesn’t? It is quite possible that we are living in a bizzaro parallel universe. What evidence does NBALOUD have to state this claim? Well, the only undefeated teams in the season so far are the Philadelphia 76’ers, New Orleans Hornets and the Utah Jazz. Now, these teams aren’t exactly the worst teams out there but who would have imagined at this early stage of the season these would be the teams that would have zero losses against their names? Come on be honest here. No one would have picked that!

Not convinced that this has been a most unusual start to the NBA season. Well, besides the always superb Allen Iverson the two other players that would have a fair argument as to the best players of the league so far are Carlos Boozer and Joe Johnson. Who? Carlos Boozer and Joe Johnson damnit! Not convinced, try this on for size: Boozer’s averages for the season at this early stage of the season are 20.7 points, 15.0 rebounds and 1.3 assts per

game, while Johnson’s numbers are 28.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5 dimes per contest. Hell, Carlos was the co-player of the week with Iverson.

As mentioned earlier the Suns have lost three out of their first four games, while Dallas hasn’t even won one game out of three yet! Miami are one and two, while the Hornets are unbeaten! Miami’s struggles may be further exacerbated with the fact that Shaquille O’Neal sat out of their last contest due to a knee injury. The big fella has been a one of a kind player, never to be replicated again, but no one can escape the ravages of age – Shaq is 35.

However, there are a few things that are still taking a logical path of development such as the progress of Yao Ming who has been in scorching form averaging 25 points, 8.3 boards and 1.3 blocks per game. Yao’s efforts are in stark contrast to the other Houston Rocket superstar Tracy McGrady who has been shooting a woeful 34% from the field, down ten from his career average.

The most pleasant surprise has been the solid play of star crossed veteran and all-round nice guy Grant Hill. Grant in recent years has had terrible luck with injuries and it is nice to see him finally do well. Although he doesn’t have the sheer physical talent that made him one of the best players in the 90’s, there is no matching his basketball acumen.

Do you know what else has been weird about this season thus far? The player that wears number ‘8’ for the Lakers has gone missing, but a player wearing number ‘24’ looks suspiciously a lot like a certain baller named Kobe Bryant.

What do you dear reader think has been the biggest surprise of the early NBA season?

Biggest surprise: Probably Dallas' poor start to the season.

The 76ers have started well but they won't keep it up if they are hit by injury, they only have 5 contributing players and Webber and Dalembert are injury-prone.

But Q for the Knicks not only starting but scoring 20 points a game was unexpected. Little Boykins also has had a big start to the season.

A different surprise is Morrison off the bench for Charlotte. Morrison is still averaging 16 points a game, so is in the running for not only the rookie award but the 6th man award too. Morrison is playing around 30 minutes which is good for a rookie in their first week in the league.

yes, the poor start for the finalists is a huge surprise and you're right about the sixers, they lost today.

morrison is my pick for the rookie of the year because he is playing great ball even shutting down lebron with a little help from his teammates of course.

my biggest surprise has been the play of the atlanta hawks who all of the sudden look like a very good team with joe johnson taking away the very early season mvp.
