Ladies and gentleman, give it up for the 2006 WNBA champions the Detroit Shock! In the fifth and deciding game of the September classic the series went all the way down to the wire and ended up with Detroit
dethroning the defending champion Sacramento Monarchs, 80-75.
Finals MVP Deanna Nolan scored 10 of her 24 points during a vital 18-3 run during a key second half scoring binge that snuffed the Sacramento championship effort. Katie Smith who has also been the standout for Detroit scored 17 points to consolidate her status as WNBA legend. What a woman!
The Monarchs were once again led by Kara Lawson who paced Sacramento with 17 points, but it was to little avail. There was no denying the Detroit Shock.
Bill Laimbeer was back on the winner’s podium as the coach of the Shock. Give it up for Wild Bill too.
In NBA news legendary players Sir Charles Barkley, Dominique “The Human Highlight Film’ Wilkins, and Joe Dumars were inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame over the weekend.
Anyone growing up watching basketball in the 80’s would have been very familiar with the three aforementioned players and their wonderful basketball talents. Although, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan dominated the NBA scene in the 1980’s – Charles, ‘Nique and Joe were awesome players in their own right.
Barkley was inducted into the Hall of Fame at his first opportunity to be elected, while Joe and ‘Nique were pleasant surprises after they were snubbed last year.
Michael Jordan had frequently stated that Joe Dumars was the toughest defender he had ever faced, while who could forget The Human Highlight Film and his slam dunk contest showdowns against His Airness. Dominique was one of a kind.
Let’s give it up for the Detroit Shock and the 2006 Hall of Fame inductees who are all deserved champions in their own right.

I remember the Pistons in the early nineties facing the unstoppable Bulls in their division though putting up challenges in the guard department in the way of Joe Dumars and Issiah Thomas. Before the day of Grant Hill these guys were the go-to-guys for Detroit. (Don't know what it's like now though!)
The Atlanta Hawks were held up by Wilkins in the same era. From memory fellow contributors were Glen Rice and Stacey Allen but they didn't almost reach the heights of Wilkins.
And lastly, the aggressive Barkley. This was the first prototype power forward that enabled Rodman to envision pulling down as many from the boards as he did. Charles and Kevin Johnston (KJ) troubled the Bulls in their day to getting NBA champions and rightly so.
