question that needs to be asked is: Do any readers still care? Well, of course you do because it is about basketball and we all know that whatever this writer loves the rest of the world does too! I’m not egocentric, I’m just drawn that way!

Anyway, the first quarter-final results have come through and there were no surprises with both teams of Latin heritage going through to the semi-finals, and quite easily too it should be added.

Beginning with the game involving Spain (hey, that rhymes!), Pau Gasol the superstar for the team from the Iberian coast kicked so much Lithuanian butt that they may have been dining at Ferran Adria’s award winning restaurant El Bulli in the manner they dined on the team from the Baltic region! Yes, this writer has somehow inserted a highbrow culinary analogy into a basketball blog! As an aside do check out El Bulli’s website you won’t be disappointed for the sheer outrageous originality of Adria’s cooking.

Yes, back to the game, Spain killed! Lithuania was outgunned by Gasol as mentioned before who dropped 25 rebounds and had nine rebounds to produce a dominant individual performance.

Spain also produced on the defensive end producing 17 steals and forced the Lithuanians into 28 turnovers, way above their averages in the tournament,

The Spanish are now into their second straight semi-finals without a blemish against their name. They look mean, they look keen, and I bet they’ve been eating their greens.

Meanwhile, the other Latino team also entered into their second straight World Championship semi-finals with a resounding victory over the Turks. Andres

Nocioni scored 21 points in an overall dominating victory for the Argentineans.

Argentina will now face Spain in the semi-finals and we can all envision that both sets of players with be producing “yo, mama” insults in Spanish – with the Spaniards speaking with more of a lisp.

Turkey was destroyed on both ends by Argentina. The Turks were held to a solitary seven points in the second quarter and it got worse when their opposition hit 55% of their field goals. Deadly.

Manu Ginobili, aka El Loco only scored seven points, on 1-for-2 shooting from 16 minutes of play. Luckily for Argentina they have a great team with many NBA players on the squad that can step up and fill the void – Andres Nocioni in this case.

The rest of the quarter-final games will be played tonight with the big one between Germany and the United States. This writer is drooling at that match-up like one of Pavlov’s dogs. Again with the highbrow referencing! Time to dumb it down a bit with sticking crayons up my nose.
