Shaq Gets Stuffed. Pistons Win!
June 1st 2006 08:24
The Ben Wallace block of Shaquille O’Neal’s attempted throwdown
dunk in the third quarter epitomised the desperation that the Pistons played with today in their 91-78 defeat of Miami to stave off elimination.
The Beast’s block on Shaq daddy was a momentum swinging moment that breathed new life in the rest of the Pistons players. The swarming defence was back, as well as the balanced offensive attack with Tayshaun Prince (29), Chauncey Billups (17) and Rip Hamilton (16) all producing the digits necessary for Detroit to defeat the Heat.
Dwayne Wade was held to a series “low” of 23 points, while the Diesel dropped 19.
Facing a series ending defeat the Pistons came out firing on all cylinders with Rip grabbing a career playoff high of 10 boards, while Ben Wallace achieved a feat that was so rare in nature that the only thing would be more surprising was the reappearance of the dodo – he made a three point play. Yes, Virginia a Christmas miracle was achieved. The Beast hit a free throw.
History would suggest that Miami are on the brink of a first finals appearance with 40 of 43 teams with a 3-1 lead in a playoff series advancing to the next round, and most potentially depressing for the Pistons – the previous 16 teams with that lead have gone on to win. However, these Pistons are used to defying logic and will look to overrun the Heat in games six and seven.
The Pistons are a battle hardened unit and are ready to kick ass in the final two (?) games, but D-Wade and Shaq daddy are hungry.
Wade has always talked about being the first player of the “next” generation to win a title, rather than focusing on individual goals which illustrates the type of player he is, while the Big Aristotle just wants one to stick it up to Kobe and the Lakers organisation.
Whatever the outcome this is one conference final that will be compelling to watch.
