Ron Artest: The Best Player in the Whole Damn NBA!
April 8th 2006 05:41
First and foremost welcome to my new NBA website. Yes, hard to believe but I am actually getting paid to write about basketball! If you look outside you will now realise that the day I get paid to write about ball is the day flying pigs will be flying outside your window. This site isn’t much yet but with a little spit and polish, not to mention some assistance from the administrators this place may be a democratic cyber café in regards to all things basketball.
A little introduction into this site might suffice – this page is basically an open forum to talk about basketball and all opinions are open. But keep it clean please because I am bound by a whole bunch of legal crap and being a law student I am theoretically in tune with the legal parameters I can operate within. That being said how ‘bout a drum roll for my first entry: RON ARTEST IS THE BEST DAMN BALL PLAYER IN THE NBA!
Yes, you read correctly. You aren’t going blind, and no I am not suffering from a case of syphilis where my mental capacity is being diluted by an STD. In my humble, yet all knowing opinion Ron Ron is the best player in the league. There is little debate that he is a head case. However, the man can straight up ball! Since his arrival into Sac Town he has transformed the once maligned Kings into playoff contenders.
I have always appreciated Artest’s hustle and defence, but what struck me while watching the Kings and Spurs game on Thursday was the fact the man could almost do anything he wanted at will on the offensive end. He is a match-up nightmare, with his big body he can pile it in and post up on any player. The man is a machine because he can defend in almost every position bar the big guys in the middle.
All talk surrounding the best player in the league usually surrounds players with the names of ‘Kobe’, ‘Lebron’, or ‘Tim’ but how ‘bout some love for Ron Ron? In order to back up my argument I am going to breakdown his game for you dear reader.
Offense: This is the most underrated aspect of Ron Ron’s game. Kobe gets much kudos for his skills (81 points, anyone?) but Artest can shoot from long range, while backing it down. The man is averaging a very respectable 17.4 points a game, while grabbing 5 boards and dropping 4 dimes. He makes the King’s better with his mere presence. He isn’t like a Ben Wallace who is primarily a defensive juggernaut. The man carries the load on both ends and the defender cannot slack up on him like the Ben.
Against the World Champion Spurs for example Ron Ron managed to hit 50 percent of his field goals, while going three from three beyond the arc, dropping 15, while playing his man so closely that even the NBA groupies don’t get as close as Artest does to his opponent.
Defence: This is where Ron Ron is at his best. Artest, along with Big Ben, and Bruce Bowen are the best individual defenders in the ‘L’ according to Bill Walton on Thursday’s game, and I wholeheartedly agree. Ron doesn’t let up when he is locking down his opponents. He is such a beast on the defensive end he may as well be a fat kid clinging onto a Big Mac.
Unlike Kobe, Artest has totally turned his team into a hardened group of hustlers. His mere presence has changed their attitude, and you can see it in the King’s play. Ron Ron doesn’t get any love because of his past history which is a shame because he actually plays the game the right way as Larry Brown is so fond of stating. He isn’t a Kobe who plays a one-on-five style of game, or a Lebron who has a $US90 million Nike deal who gets all the publicity. Ron Ron is just a straight up man!
So, there you go. My first entry is now history and I started off with a bang. And if anyone didn’t hear me the first time I’ll say this again: RON ARTEST IS THE BEST DAMN BALL PLAYER IN THE NBA!

I just wanted to say I am actually from the US and go to school in Indiana at Indiana University. My really good friend is Ron Artest's brother, so I agree he is a really cool guy. Just thought I would comment on that. But I actually think Dwayne Wade from the Miami Heat is the best basketball player.
Good luck with the site! Look forward to hearing about my favorite sport!

I can't say I'm an avid follower of the NBA nor is shooting a ball through a hoop my forte, but I do appreciate the skill and competitiveness that is the NBA.
Oh, and to return the favour, Stanley, here's a shameless plug for my motoring blog: http://www.look4motors.com.au
