Bobby Brown in the NBA?

July 14th 2008 05:48
-Top 10 pack of summer league intrigues

Summer League Action at its best chronicling the standouts and most notable recruits from years past who basically will not make NBA squads due to the fact of other players guaranteed contracts. The headline was misleading as when I heard that Bobby Brown helped the New Orleans Hornets beat the Charlotte Bobcats in summer-league action July 13th. I quickly realized the error in judgment on my part, but I was unsure at first glance whether it was Mr. New Edition or maybe Whitney Houston’s’ son. I did recall seeing the son of Brown on an upstart rock star contest for celebrity offspring a while back, what was his name?
Bobby Brown

Thus here is a brief bio for the player to be nicknamed later who does resemble the old-school singer.
Bobby Brown stands at six-foot-two was born in 1984 and came out of Cal-State Fullerton. This would be his rookie season if he were to make the Hornets. Brown played over in Germany last year with powerhouse Alba Berling.

Ndubi Ebi
Interesting note Ndubi Ebi is back in the NBA for the moment as he is on New Orleans summer-league team. He was a draft choice of Minnesota 26th pick in 2003 regarded as one of the many mistakes that Kevin McHale has made as GM. Now 24 years of age he signed with the NBDL’s Fort Worth Flyers in 2007. I have had him in my sights as he (I believe) is of British decent. Playing for the Hornets in the Vegas league he is also listed for the new Oklahoma City ToBeNamedLaters in the Orlando Pro summer league. Ebi just needs a shot as his tweener frame gives matchups nightmares. Shot-blocking and spot up jumpers are intact.

Demetrius Nichols
Demetrius Nichols is still yet to find the right opportunity. As a rookie he was moved twice becoming a member of the Knicks, Cavs and Bulls in his first year. Out of Syracuse I think he may have left for the NBA to early a year pro or in the NBDL would have served him best to bring his game to the professional level. It will take some work to adapt his skills to the NBA game. I am still pulling for him as many from the Orange begin to have prosperous careers in the NBA.

Pape Sow
Another Cal-State guy who has the heart of steel still making a go at his NBA career after breaking his neck in a Toronto Raptors summer league game a few years back Pape Sow has a lifelong fan in me. At 6’10” he was once touted as a “poor mans Ben Wallace” by a popular basketball site, currently playing for the Mavericks summer team.

Elton Brown
Elton Brown from Virginia just needs a chance to get groomed behind a solid frontcourt player. Comments seem good as he is likely to get an NBA contract this season if all goes well.

Dahntay Jones
Dahntay Jones a solid swingman who came into the NBA with the exact same skill-set of Vince Carter, though Carter worked on his shot and other aspects while Jones struggled with his shooting touch. I was sure that he would be a good addition to the Celtics last season but that did not last. Something I just realized, Jones played at Rutgers before going to Duke.

Jelani McCoy
What player was signed and waived by the Denver Nuggets a few times last season? What Supersonics draft pick has a worse FT% than Shaq? He was named All-NBDL 3rd team in 2008, give up? It is Jelani McCoy a long lost solid rebounding center from UCLA. He gives you all a team needs if you give him the role he relishes. McCoy filled in admirably for the Toronto Raptors at one point and started well for the most part while the raps had their issues in the middle a few years back and I was sure that he would stick but it didn’t happen becoming unsigned after the season. Back with the Nuggets summer team.

Loren Woods
Loren Woods is a massively lengthy undersized big man. Solid in stretches and can hit the open J. He will continue getting his shot in the NBA as teams need that third center or sixth big-man. Woods came out of Arizona and also played at Wake Forest. Has moved from Lithuania to Turkey and signed a 10-day contract with the short Houston Rockets in March 2008. He did moderately decent and signed a second one in April. He actually won the Lithuanian League with Zalgaris Kaunas in 2007 no stats available. Back with Rockets summer team.

PJ Tucker
Interesting, they list a player as “A power forward in a small forward's body”. Guess what they have him listed as a shooting guard-SG, man that is worth a chuckle. Of course I am talking about the diminutive PJ Tucker, drafted by the Toronto Raptors in the second round a couple years back at #35, which should be a good guess. Everything about this I love, he can believe it or not stretch the defense with his shaky jumper at times, his real talent as your 12th man. The Raptors hurt his stock making him go out in there shot-happy offense at the time where he would have to create anything he’d get. His shots should come from pounding it into him with undersized three’s. At only 6’5” he is a solid tweener and can play the four-spot if you have a bigger center to make up for it. A true favorite of mine and the player the fan just wants to cheer for.

Yuta Tabuse Japanese
Last and certainly least (no disrespect) meaning little Yuta Tabuse at 5’9” a just over 100lbs soaken wet. For fans we first saw him make his debut with the Phoenix Suns as the first Japanese-born player to ever to make the NBA. He is and was a speedy PG who needed to slow the game down in his mind to make better passes. Tabuse quickly was hurt by teams lagging of him to give him free open long-range shots, which he was less than stellar at. That spelled the end of his brief NBA stint. If he can harness his skill and have a veteran’s presence to his playmaking ability, watch out his lightning quick first step leaves no doubt of his skill.

So that is it, my top ten must-knows of 2008. In this years NBA summer league action. For any information needed or any other players you would like to know of their whereabouts feel free to comment below and one of the writers for this site, myself especially will respond as soon as possible, thanks for reading.

2008 NBA Draft Part II

July 3rd 2008 04:01
I will run down the next part of the lottery picked players, up until the fourteenth pick, imparting my knowledge on select players and teams.

# 6
DANILO GALLINARI
With the 6th pick the New York Knicks drafted a player that may do well in this league, but have to adapt his game over a few years, to make his mark for the Knicks. Another head-scratcher for New York, they have the talent, they just need to get them to work together, a huge obstacle for Dantoni to overcome, an opposite type team as compared to his Suns when he first came in.

# 7
ERIC GORDON
A solid addition to next year’s squad, especially with Maggette opting out, they will need all the swingmen they can find to fill up that hole.

# 8
JOE ALEXANDER
An intriguing team now with RJ-Richard Jefferson (if he ever shows up), they still have Bogut and Charlie V in the frontcourt but still for me it would have been real tough to give up on Yi. But hopefully RJ can show Michael Redd how to take the ball to the basket and not settle for three’s.

# 9
DJ AUGUSTIN
A solid PG and clutch-performer will be solid in trading off with Felton and also can see these two playing a little together. Charlotte just drafted quality players.

# 10 BROOK LOPEZ

# 11 JERRYD BAYLESS

# 12
JASON THOMPSON

# 13
BRANDON RUSH
Drafted by Portland then in turn sent to Indiana. Rush is now on the same roster as his brother Kareem. Kareem Rush seems to have stuck on with Bird and the Pacers. Brandon is solid and will do well in the right system in the NBA.

# 14
ANTHONY RANDOLPH
Randolph is the same type player as the Warriors current PF in Brandon Wright. They are getting long athletic forwards as they still want to run.

To follow, the rest of the draft and up to minute trades that have gone down and that are going down, signings and rumors.

The 2008 NBA Draft

July 1st 2008 03:49
I’d like to post about the previously finished NBA Draft. A lot of trades were completed/proposed making this years draft exciting and noteworthy. In this first post I will be going through the top five picks and thereafter with updates and all you need to know up to the minute stats and transactions.

Let’s get this post draft analysis going with the first overall pick for the Chicago Bulls DERRICK ROSE. Rose out of Memphis has a solid NBA body and can take the punishment as a player in the paint. He will mold himself into whatever type of player his team needs him to be as evident by the video below. He is one of the most ready-type players to enter the league. A truly solid addition to any team, kind of makes me think of the miss of Jay Williams. In which whom the Bulls took as the savior type PG years ago before he had his motorcycle accident stifling his promising career. With this pick Chicago puts themselves back into contention for a playoff spot in the East.

Derrick Rose #1 NBA Pick 2008
This video shows how Rose can affect the game as he will become a solid NBA-PG.

# 2
Michael Beasley #2 NBA Pick 2008
Undoubtedly the Miami Heat selected MICHAEL BEASLEY out of Kansas State. This PF needs no introduction to basketball fans as his huge wingspan makes up for any negativity about his height at the four spot. One of the perfect teams for Beasley to go to, I think his character issues would only become apparent if he were to have to battle with a solid proven veteran for his starting spot. He will be going in battling Udonis Haslem who has seen his stock drop as he needs to create more of his own offence. The heat I am sure are not finished in tweaking their team for the 08/09 season. Marion though will alleviate any concerns of the rookie being overmatched down-low as he is almost like an extra PF out there sometimes with his rebounding efforts and hustle in trying to make the right plays.

# 3
OJ Mayo #3 NBA Pick 2008
Minnesota at the third spot went with OJ MAYO, who I have seen and been hearing about for a good number of years. Mayo will be a solid two as at 6’4” 200lbs he is limited in selected positions, but this guy is just a born scorer and if he ends up in Grizz-town, look for him to team up with Rudy Gay as Mike Miller was moved with Memphis making the choice to let him go after he admittedly carried the Grizzlies last season at times. In return Minnesota looks to get #5 Kevin Love. I am in love with this deal as the T-Wolves send Antoine Walker also to MEM. Minnesota gets the scoring they desperately need and character guys, to build around. I know what fans may be thinking and no this isn’t the second coming of Wally World, Mike Miller is a gamer playing all three spots from 1-3 for the Grizz and did whatever was asked, as he became a versatile and proven scorer, unlike streaky Szczerbiak.

# 4
Russell Westbrook #4 NBA Pick 2008
Russell Westbrook a surprise at number four as the top three had virtually been decided weeks beforehand. Westbrook though an unexpected pick is an explosive guard that will do well in this league especially when Seattle gets all the parts and can continuously run up and down with Durant and Green. The Sonics clearly want a guard that can break down the D and get up and down the court at breakneck speeds. They have found that guy with Westbrook. People want to compare him to NBA champion Rajon Rondo and maybe Monta Ellis, he is long and skinny and extremely athletic, time will tell if he can make the right passes for a long career with Durant by his side.

# 5
Kevin Love #5 NBA Pick 2008
Care of NBADraft.net
Memphis picks Kevin Love at the number five spot and in turn will be sending him to Minnesota in the deal outlined in the third pick paragraph. Love is solid, not an athlete like the Grizz love at the four spot, but the T-Wolves just need ballers in which Kevin is for sure. Down-low he will be helped by Al Jefferson for sure on defense. Also he will have a great passer in Mike Miller to get the ball to him in good spots. I like Kevin Love on a solid team a rebuilding team he may flourish or sink as he’ll need to create his own offence and may struggle with the speed of the NBA at first.

Gilbert Arenas
Just recently, the Wizards' Gilbert Arenas came out and said that he will be looking for max money from whatever team is interested in signing him. If his knee is healthy, he wants the max, but if he's still having problems, he'll settle for less. First of all, I don't think Gil will admit that his knee is not 100% and settle for less money. He also claimed that he'll take less money from the Wizards if it means having Jameson return as well. A few days later, he changed his mind and said that he won’t return unless Jameson is signed as well. Now, before Agent Zero goes around making all these demands, we have to determine whether or not he is even worth the max. So, is he? That depends on a few things...

We all know that Arenas is one of the best scorers in the league today. Even though he missed most of the season, I have no doubt that he'll bounce back next season provided that he is healthy enough to play. When using his skill set as the only indicator, I would agree that Arenas is worth the max. But as we all know, when you acquire a player, you bring aboard a lot more than just their skills. Gil is extremely outspoken and the fact that he has no agent will probably make negotiations unbearable. I could just imagine trying to negotiate a contract with Arenas... it would be like trying to reason with a 10 year old. It’s not that he’s unintelligent, just immature at times. He’ll go around telling everyone that he’s going to score 50 points against Portland, then go out there and jack up shots only to realize that he isn’t making any of them. Why does he do this you ask? Because he was cut from the National Team.

Arenas also goes out there and takes 27 foot jumpers when the clock is winding down at the end of a quarter. Sure, you’ll see the highlights whenever he makes one, but what about all the times he misses? I’m sure he misses those shots a lot more than he makes them. On the court, he is all about showboating and trying to get attention. He has yet to mature and reach that next level. His scoring ability is amazing, but he can’t and won’t fulfill his true potential unless he smartens up. Since the sky is the limit for Agent Zero, I guess I would take the chance and give him the max assuming he was completely healthy. A player such as him does not hit the market very often, and if you’re looking for that game-changer, then he is that player.

He’d probably be a good locker room guy, but a bad guy to deal with if you’re part of management. The fans will probably love him when he makes those ridiculous 3s, but the coach would shake his head regardless of whether or not it went in. No matter what you think of Arenas, I think we can all admit that he is an entertaining character both on and off the court. But when you stand out from the crowd the way he does, the spotlight is sure to shine in places you don’t want it to.

Paul Pierce: A Gangster?

May 1st 2008 15:03
Paul Pierce
Does this look like the face of a gangster to you?
I'm sure we've all heard about the ridiculous fine received by the Celtics' Paul Pierce the other day. Pierce flashed what some call a gang sign towards Atlanta's Al Horford in game five of the Celts-Hawks series. He was fined $25,000 and the team says they are going to appeal after the season is over. Of course Pierce denies that it was a gang sign and as much as well all love to hate on athletes that make millions, I'm on his side for this one.

Why am I on his side you ask? Because he's Paul Pierce. He's one of the last superstars in the league that I would associate with a gang. He looks like your average Joe, just 8 inches taller and more athletic. A lot of players have their little signs they throw up before games, during games or after games. Some of it I find quite abnormal, like when Darius Miles used to do the horns or whatever it was... never liked it. So, Pierce got knocked $25,000 for throwing up that sign where you have the thumb and index forming an "O" and the other three fingers are extended as you would when you are holding up three fingers. Wish I could find a photo of Pierce doing this, but I couldn't. Not to fear though, I found something even better...

Jose Calderon
First Pierce, now Calderon?

Seems as if Calderon has joined Pierce's gang. Calderon might even be the leader since he's holding up two hands instead of one!

No, Calderon is not in a gang... at least none that I am aware of. Pierce was not flashing gang signs at Al Horford. He might have been trying to make a statement by flashing "his" sign (similar to giving a hard stare in my opinion), but it had nothing to do with any gang. The NBA overreacted and I'm glad the Celtics' organization didn't fall for it. They are fighting it, which is the right thing to do. It's not about the $25,000, because that's meaningless to Pierce, but it's the principle of the matter. That's my take on the situation, feel free to agree.

Why Kobe Bryant is the 07/08 MVP

April 30th 2008 20:24
Kobe Bryant
The 2007-2008 NBA regular season has seen some of the most spectacular individual achievements that the league has seen in a long time. We've got Chris Paul, LeBron James and Dwight Howard all putting up monster statistical seasons. Let's not forget about Kevin Garnett; the man credited for the massive turnaround of what was once a dismal Celtics franchise. Garnett's spot in the MVP race is not based off of stats, but instead, his intangibles.

Then we have Kobe Bryant, who has been the lone superstar in Los Angeles for the past few seasons. Kobe assisted in the growth of a young Laker squad and put them atop the West early on in the season. While it may not have been his best season statistically, the 2007-2008 campaign was definitely Kobe's most impressive season as a leader and teammate. As a result, the Lakers finished first in the very tough Western Conference.

Bryant is the NBA MVP for a number of reasons. First of all, he was his team's most valuable player. Some of you may laugh at this, but it's easily the first step. Can we all say with absolute certainty that KG is the most valuable player on the Celtics? Didn't think so. KG and Pierce were almost even with regards to stats and I give Garnett the edge in defense. But KG only played 71 games during the regular season while Pierce played in 80. Is an MVP allowed to miss 11 games in a season? That's 13% of the games... which brings me to my next point.

Bryant played in all 82 games this season. A good portion of these games were played while Kobe was injured. If you watched him play, you wouldn't guess that he has to have surgery on his hand/finger at the end of the season, but he does. The guy did not take a break; he gave you an MVP-type performance almost every night. And he's still going strong into the playoffs as the Lakers just swept the 8th seeded Nuggets.

The Lakers finished first in the West. It doesn't make Kobe the MVP, but it sure adds to his case. He's the best player on the best team in the West (which also happens to be the best conference). Doesn't that sound good? The Lakers weren't even expected to win the division, much less the entire conference.

And to top it all off, Kobe had a monster season. He was second in the league in scoring and had another top-notch defensive season. He brought out that killer instinct when the time was right (see Dallas game). He dropped dimes as if he was a PG, and had some great all-around performances (see Denver playoff game). He's been doing this for the past few seasons and has evolved and learned even more ways to beat his opponents. He is the most effective game-changer in the league today, the most talented player in the league today, and above all else, he makes his team better. This is why Kobe Bryant will be your 2007/2008 NBA MVP.

Argh! The 'joys' of moving into a completely new place. Trying to get a phone line, let alone broadband connection is a two week process. Furthermore, being back at work and balancing a social life doesn't help matters at all.

So, as a bailout, here is a NBA N00b, Jamario Moon, the man with the mad hops giving us a preview of what to expect in a couple of weeks time in Nawlins. Enjoy.

America is heading into recession! Yeah right, not if Shaquille O’Neal has anything to do with it.

The much maligned legal system does occasionally provide entertainment. Well, disregarding
Shaq on the bench.

the whole “justice” aspect of the courts because who really cares about that? We all just want celebrity dirt, and court documents provide a plethora of sordid information about the famous.

As part of his current divorce proceedings, Shaq had to divulge to the courts his financial expenditures, and what we have learnt is that not only is the Daddy a massive guy, but he is a giant with a huge appetite as well!

In court documents revealed today, O’Neal earns $US1.8 million a month, but blows more than half of it living the lifestyle fit for Superman. Well, Bizzaro Superman who robs banks, whilst turning everyday into a par-tay.

Here is a breakdown of what the Diesel spends in an average month:

$110, 505 on monthly holidays.

$60, 417 on gifts (Hey, Shaq, can we be pals?).

$23, 950 on clothes, dry cleaning and laundry.

$46, 500 on child care.

$24, 300 on oil for his rides (Wow, what about the carbon footprint?).

$468, 345 on three home mortgages.

$12, 775 on food (foie gras, caviar and truffles, sprinkled with gold dust must feature prominently on his menu).

The clincher is the Daddy pays nearly $500, 000 a month in income taxes. So, the grand total of Shaq’s monthly cash outlay: An estimated, $875, 000 in expenses every four weeks!

Well, the man’s appetites, matches his size that’s for sure.

Today’s video is of the Daddy showing why he spends so much on food a month.

Portland Trail Blazers players celebrate Martin Luther King Day.

Today was a very significant holiday in the United States: it’s the day when they celebrate a key figure in American history – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The influence of the great man can be seen all around in the NBA with the dominance of African-Americans in the sport, and how they are widely admired, accepted and emulated. Players in the NBA should never forget his legacy.

For Theo Ratliff, the centre for the Minnesota Timberwolves, MLK Day has an extra special pertinence because he grew up in Alabama, with his mother and uncle marching with Dr. King in the Selma march in 1965.

“My family was a big part of that, that whole movement…It always had a big part in our lives, remembering the struggles. My mom told me about that.” (Youngblood, Star Tribune, 2008)

The Portland Trail Blazers also embraced the day by visiting Dr. King’s birth home in Atlanta and the YMCA where he learnt how to play basketball. Blazers star, Brandon Roy for one shining moment envisioned what it must have been like to be Dr. King.

“To see the house where he was born, and to go to the gym where he played some hoop was kind of cool," Roy said. “It's like you get to walk in his shoes for a minute, which is a great moment, especially for us being African American males. Because of a lot of the things we are able to do today are things he fought for.” (Quick, The Oregonian, 2008)

Portland’s director of player programs, Chris Bowles tries to schedule excursions that will enhance the understanding of the world for his players. Coincidentally, Portland were in Atlanta for MLK Day, with Bowles taking the Blazers players on a trip that would further enliven their minds, and spirits with an education on black history.

Perhaps we should leave the final word for Brandon Roy who sums up Dr. King’s legacy perfectly: “I've got good friends that are all different races, and it's all because he fought for those things. He didn't fight for one race to be more than another. He fought for everybody to be equal. That's the thing that I really respect.” (Adande, ESPN, 2008)

Today’s video is of various NBA players stating what MLK Day means to them.

Voting ended today for the NBA All-Star game and we’re all waiting for the final numbers with bated breath. Obviously the players that participate in the mid-season classic are the cream of the crop, with no need to beg for loose change. Actually, those sitting on NBA benches wouldn’t be seeking food stamps either, so let’s not
Maurice Baker, Dakota Wizards.
Maurice Baker is a real NBA talent. (Garrett Ellwood/NBAE/Getty Images)
get ahead of ourselves.

Basically put, those who play pro-basketball to paraphrase Kanye West, are leading the good life – which is totally opposite to those who are plying their trade in the D-League. For a quick refresher on what the D-League is click here.

Recently, the D-League players displayed their talents in a four day showcase that featured ballers from all of the franchises. Cramming 14 games into four days, in Boise, Idaho, the D-League showcase had some really great players that would fit into any NBA franchise like a glove on O.J. Simpson.

Every NBA team had a scout witnessing the proceedings and they had to come away suitably impressed with some of the exciting skills on display.

Arguably, the toughest position for NBA franchises to fill is the point guard role. The one man has to run the show and is also the on-court coach. Luckily for those NBA teams that need a solid point guard to distribute the ball, would have loved the play of Maurice Baker of the Dakota Wizards.

Many contenders are in dire need of a solid back-up and Baker would be an outstanding player for teams such as the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers.

The eye opening game for Baker was when he went head-to-head with Chicago Bulls rookie, JamesOn Curry, who is currently plying his trade with the Iowa Energy. Maurice took the young wannabe Bull to school with 41 points, six assists and six steals. Oh, and perhaps the most remarkable stat of all for NBA teams that are searching for their gold ticket-esque point guard – no turnovers.

In another game, Baker grabbed 15 rebounds! Yes, a 6’1” point guard snatched 15 boards. Do we need anymore evidence that there is a potential star in the D-League? Come on Cleveland, Boston et. al. grab Maurice Baker before he burns your squad playing for an opposing team.

Today’s video is of Maurice Baker and that 41 point performance.

No, LeBron James wasn’t driving a bus loaded with a bomb. He was just ‘cruising’ in his Mercedes. Well, if you consider driving 101mph (163 km) a leisurely Sunday drive.

The cherry on top for King James, personalised plates “King of AK”, by the way, was that he
LeBron James driving.
LeBron James does some legal driving. (Photo by David Liam Kyle/NBAE via Getty Images)
was busted on his 23rd birthday. Ohio state police stopped Bron-Bron at 2.43 am, with the officer who pulled James over saying that he was polite and courteous.

James’ lawyer filed a not guilty plea in the municipal court with a scheduled hearing on February 11. If found to have broken the law, LeBron will face a $US150 fine. Ouch. That has got to hurt a guy who signed a $US100 million contract with a ubiquitous shoe company as an 18 year old.

To put LeBron’s actions in perspective 300, 000 people were busted for speeding last year in Ohio, with just 1400 going over 160 mph. Even more sobering was that former Cavs player Bobby Phillis was killed whilst travelling 160km per hour in his Porsche in 2000. So, he shouldn’t believe that he is bullet proof. Kings have been killed in the past.

In other NBA news, Andrew Bynum, the burgeoning Los Angeles Laker star is out of action for two months with a knee injury after landing on teammate, Lamar Odom’s foot, going for a rebound over the weekend.

Bynum’s injury is a huge blow for the Lake Show because his stellar play has helped the team become a Western Conference powerhouse.

The injury suffered by Bynum comes at a time when the Lakers are heading into a very tough schedule, facing some stiff competition.

Although, the injury looked serious initially, it could have been much worse. After MRI tests and an examination, Bynum had temporarily dislocated his knee cap. L.A. will be without Andrew for approximately two months, recovering in time for the Lakers playoff run.

With Bynum missing, Kobe Bryant will take a much larger role. Expect more highlights from the star Laker. For anyone who may have forgotten how talented Kobe is. Check out his top 10 highlights from 2007.

From Playground Legend to NBA Star.

January 8th 2008 10:50
When watching street basketball, such as the guys from And1, a common utterance from gobsmacked audiences is: ‘why aren’t these cats playing, pro?’ That is a good question.

Believe it or not, a lot of the stuff that streetballers are able to manufacture on court, the pros
Rafer Alston.
Skip to My Lou, skipping to the basket. (Photo by Fernando Medina/NBAE via Getty Images)
can’t replicate. Even so, players that have honed their skills on the concrete courts of the city don’t usually make good pros. For every Connie Hawkins, there is a Lloyd Daniels.

However, there is one streetball god who is bucking the trend: Rafer ‘Skip to My Lou’ Alston, who plies his trade with the Houston Rockets.

Do you readers know as to why the And1 Mix Tape Tour is so popular now? Look no further than Skip. It was his underground streetball videos that made the And1 heads sit up and take notice. He is the reason why streetball has reached the mainstream.

Making the leap from playground to the bright lights of the NBA wasn’t a seamless transition, with the street skills that Skip was so famous for disappearing. Alston initially had little to no impact on the league with the Milwaukee Bucks. After being traded to the Miami Heat, Alston began to flourish and was seen to be capable of running a team (let’s not talk about his time in Toronto though).

Now, with Houston, Skip was bought in by Jeff Van Gundy who has a history of dealing with supposedly, surly players and bringing the best out of them. For a long while, Alston was seen as expendable for the Rockets, but is now an integral part of the team.

How did ‘Skip to My Lou’, become Rafer Alston, NBA starter? Well, it was a lot of hard work and breaking down his game back to the basics. After an offseason where he improved his offensive skills, the work has now finally paid off after a hairy beginning shooting at just 37 percent from the field.

One of the biggest problems with Skip was his tendency to gun it from long range, but now has settled into a smarter player, driving the ball and scoring at a higher rate.

"I think Rafer's really done a nice job in the last week and a half, two weeks doing that," coach Rick Adelman said. "I think he has a mindset because of the opportunities there. The way teams are trying to defend us, it's going to be open. If we set a good screen for him, or any of the guards, if they're going to put two guys on Yao, there's no one to help, and he can attack the basket. We have to do it that way. We have to attack." (Feigen, Houston Chronicle, 2008)

Once upon a time, you wouldn’t dare give Skip the ball during the closing minutes of a tight contest. Now, he is a proven game winner, as evidenced by his performance against the Orlando Magic last week with a last gasp basket.

Today’s video is the mix tapes that made Rafer such a cult basketball personality.

Wow, basketball truly is an international game. If you want proof in

regards to the introductory sentence, look no further than Finland where former NBA All-Star, Scottie Pippen has been making a comeback of sorts.

Pippen suited up with Finnish League leaders, Torpan Pojat for two games, with a third, in Sundsvall, Sweden.

During the weekend, Pippen scored nine points, grabbed nine rebounds to help Torpan beat Honka, 98-85. Showing signs of rust after three years away from professional basketball, Scottie found his groove in the second half, making some impressive plays along the way.

“It was great, I did not know what to anticipate without a game for the last three years," the 42-year-old Pippen said. "My conditioning is not at the top level but I played with a great team and had a lot of fun.” (AP, 2008)

In Pip’s first game he scored 12 in another Torpan victory.

The motivation for Pippen in his mini Nordic sojourn is to inspire young Scandinavians to pick up the wonderful game.

Today’s video is highlights of Pippen’s time with Torpan. He actually looked very good.
