NBA Player Arrested, Shocked with Stun Gun in Miami.
August 5th 2006 06:29
When one hears of an NBA player arrested, and stunned with a
Taser gun who would come to mind? Allen Iverson? Ron Artest? Kobe Bryant? Or if you are really sadistic, Steve Nash? Well, no, to all of the above. The most recent addition to the NBA rap sheet is NBA veteran Dale Davis of the Detroit Pistons.
To many casual NBA fans out there Dale Davis isn’t a name that would be recognised, but he has been a solid player in the league for 15 years and is well regarded and liked. The fact that he has been arrested, and stunned would come as a mild surprise for NBA fans.
Davis was charged with assault and disorderly conduct in an alleged altercation with Miami Beach Police. Did I mention he also was electro-shocked too? Any fans of Jackass would be familiar with Johnny Knoxville’s famous experimentation with “protection” tools, and the pain with being shocked by a few thousand volts of electricity. Let’s just say it isn’t as fun as tweaking ones nipples.
Police were called to a Miami hotel by security who had asked Dale Davis to leave, which, of course he didn’t. Hardcore.
Dale was asked for identification by the police. Which, he gave without resistance, but it gets more interesting. Davis apparently accused the officers of targeting him because he was African-American, while the officers asked Davis to remove his hands out of his pockets for officer safety. Davis complied with the request and began to enquire if officers were about to shoot him.
Davis began to pull out money, his wallet, mobile phones, and credit cards to demonstrate to the officers he had nothing threatening in his possession. He put the items back into his pockets and allegedly told officers if they took off their badges and put away their guns he’d go toe-to-toe with them and beat the shit out of them. The “beat the shit out of them” aspect was added by this author.
As an aside are any of you dear, readers, fans of Michael Moore’s Awful Truth television series? If you are, the above scenario would have much resonance with a skit that Mr. Moore did with black people in New York handing in wallets to police stations because officers killed a black man who only had a wallet in his possession.
Anyway, back to Dale Davis, officers would further allege that Davis then approached them with his fists ready for action and in an aggressive manner. They warned the NBA player that if he didn’t back down they would stun him with a Taser gun. He was stunned in a literal and perhaps metaphoric sense.
To add insult to probably immense injury Davis was booked with the above mentioned charges, with resisting arrest without violence. Hmm, seems to me there was plenty of violence involved.
Although, this most humble of writers is studying law, he does have a knee jerk reaction towards police and their potential racial biases. This author is not for one moment suggesting that all police officers have a racist bent, but being conscious of the problems that black males face sometimes in American society, and with the fact that police officers in the US have a less than exemplary records on dealing with black people, we have to take these official reports with some scepticism.
So, this writer leaves this entry with one last thought about the judicial system in both Australia and the United States: innocent, until proven guilty.

NWA says, 'fuck the police'. However, NBALOUD doesn't advocate that sentiment to the fine men and women in uniform. (Image from Wikipedia)
