Mavs win Game 1 of NBA Finals
June 10th 2006 00:28
Have all you readers out there missed me the last week? Yes, I know I haven’t been writing much about basketball lately but when you are a uni
student at this time of the semester your priorities revolve around other things – drinking at the Roundhouse for instance! I am sure you, dear reader are dying to read about the NBA Finals. Game 1 went to Dallas over Miami 90-80.
The two teams putting it diplomatically were horrendous! The stars of both teams were terrible as well. Dirk Diggler and Josh Howard combined for 7-for-28 shooting! Ugly is the word that comes to mind.
Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal weren’t much better for the Heat. The daddy had 17 points, but was far from effective and not getting enough offensive touches. D-Wade dropped 26 points, but his shooting percentage was a awful 11-for-25.
What was surprising about the end result was the Heat came out shooting the lights out of the gym hitting 70 percent of their field goals. For the uninitiated out there the Heat was hot, hot, hot! Then a cold snap came suddenly and inflicted some poor performances on players from the two combatants.
Miami’s offence runs through Shaq but the big guy didn’t look like a former three time NBA Finals MVP who would demand the ball and take no prisoners.
Poor play was contagious with the prominent players in the Finals, with Antoine Walker committing six turnovers, including a couple at key moments to round off a bad night.
Naturally all you inquiring minds out there are wondering as to who was the standout player? Especially for Dallas whose two studs were duds. Well it was Jason ‘The Jet’ Terry who was the star of game 1. Terry scored 32 points and with his quickness causing major headaches for the Heat. Jet was also smoking from the three point line, hitting four of seven from beyond the arc to complete a starring night for the Mavs guard.
Jason Terry had been having a very average postseason and not surprisingly the Heat was caught with their pants down when Jet when on a scoring binge. Terry couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate time to get going – game 1 of the finals and with the two prominent players from his team having a terrible offensive night.
The bench players also made big contributions for the Mavs with Jerry Stackhouse scoring 13 key points, and Erick Dampier carrying the rather heavy load of guarding Shaq, or chopping the big man. Whichever way you choose to look at how players guard Diesel.
The big question could be was Dirk Diggler’s mind on basketball? Why would this humble writer pose a question such as that? Well, the big sauerkraut is German and his fellow sauerkrauts are playing in some little football tournament called the World Cup. Perhaps you have heard of it? And he swears that he wasn’t distracted by his football team, even if he is a massive fan. Literally and metaphorically!
The superstars from both teams have vowed to play better basketball and we can safely assume that this performance was an aberration. Pat Riley the coach of the Heat called out his players and stated they should have been embarrassed about their play in game 1. Expect big performances from the stars and the cream to rise to the top.
