NBA Loud - by Rick Gillispie

Lauren Jackson is a WNBA Super Studette!

September 10th 2007 11:19
Guess whose back? Back again, Stanley’s back, tell your friends…

Firstly, thanks to Sports Insider who has been holding down the good ol’ fort for the past week while this writer slaved away with dreaded uni assignments. For all you fantasy basketball players out there, listen to what the man has to say because he knows his stuff.

Well, since I’ve been away for the week, there have been a number of things that have
Lauren Jackson and her MVP trophy.

happened in the NBA landscape. Ah, to be honest, the only thing of significance is the U.S. men’s team killed the Americas qualifying tournament, and look like a real threat to win the gold. In fact many pundits have put forward the notion that this version of Team USA is better than the original Dream Team! That is a big call, but in the opinion of NBALOUD, a fair one.

What else has transpired? Perhaps, the biggest news in basketball that has probably fallen under the radar for most people is the fact that Australia’s own, Lauren Jackson, won her second WNBA MVP award! Go, Loz!

Ms. Action Jackson was so impressive this season that her vote tally was nearly double her nearest competitor, Becky Hammond. Lauren’s final number was 472 votes, including 42 first place votes.

She has always been first in the eyes of NBALOUD.

In capping off her super-dooper season, she also took out the WNBA defensive player of the year award, named as an All-WNBA First Team member, whilst leading the league in scoring and rebounding. Can there be anymore platitudes bestowed on this woman?

Here are just some of the numbers associated with Aussie Lauren:

Regular-season numbers: 23.8 PPG (1st in league), 51.9 FG Pct. (3rd), 9.7 rebounds (1st), 2.0 blocks (2nd).

Most WNBA seasons leading in PPG: Cynthia Cooper, 3; Lauren Jackson, 3 (2003, '04, '07); Sheryl Swoopes, 2.

Most MVPs: Lisa Leslie, 3 (2001, '04, '06); Swoopes, 3 (2000, '02, '05); Jackson, 2 (2003, '07); Cooper, 2 (1997, '98).

Winning MVP and Defensive POY in same season: Jackson, 2007; Leslie, 2004; Swoopes, 2002, '00; Yolando Griffith, 1999.

Seattle Storm coach, Anne Donavan, articulated wonderfully the sentiments of all WNBA watchers out there in regards to Jackson: “I think Lauren cemented the MVP award long before the 2007 season ended…She is a dominating force in the women's game, and clearly showed this season that she's the best player in the world. Fans in the WNBA saw an amazing display this summer when Lauren was on the court.” (ESPN.com, 2007)

Word, coach!

Lauren’s season was capped off with two sublime performances within a week of each other, when she tied the record for most points scored in a WNBA game (47), while becoming the youngest (26 years, 77 days) and fastest (209 games) player in history to score 4000 career points.

In a sentence: Lauren Jackson is the best woman’s basketball player in the world!

The luscious Ms. Jackson is our video subject for today. Enjoy.

Impressive and let me guess her male counterpart earns a gazillion dollars a year and then endorsements on top of that and poor Loz gets a trophy............

cibby - yeah she is pretty kickass and it is so good to see her doing well.

louie - unfortunately, i share your outrage. actually, lauren jackson isn't doing that badly and the wnba as a whole isn't that shocking. she would probably earn more money in europe but the best competition is still in america.

still, that doesn't make up for the fact that women basketball players get paid paltry amounts, nor do they receive the endorsement money that the males get.
