Titanic Showdown: Boston meets L.A. in NBA Finals rematch
December 25th 2008 18:03
A special game for a special day of the year.
The protagonists of the last NBA Finals will be squaring off once again after a long wait. Almost two months has passed since the 2008-2009 season began and it has been so anticipated that the league champs Boston Celtics and Western Conference kingpin Los Angeles Lakers will collide once more for what has to be the most hyped game between two powerhouse teams.
This match-up has been built up just like a potential megabuck fight in boxing. Of course, there is no need for any promotional tours to escalate the face value of this game. Boston and L.A. were both blasting away at every opposition en route to their eventual head-on collision later on.
Boston (27-2) will be on the road and the Lakers (23-5) will be right there waiting in Tinseltown. Both teams have 20-plus wins with only a combined seven losses between them. This sure is a tremendous bout between the two winningest teams in the NBA right now.
The Celtics are riding high on a franchise best 19-game winning streak blowing away most of their opponents in double-digit victory margins. The Atlanta Hawks were the closest to have snapped the streak last December 17th losing by only three points 88-85. After that, the Celtics returned home and was purely dominant in their 3-game homestead pummelling the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers in mercilless fashion.
The Lakers are coming off back-to-back wins on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies and their closest Western Conference pursuer New Orleans Hornets. Prior to that, the Lakers lost two straight road games in heartbreaking fashion against the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic. All in all, the Lakers have split their recent 4-game road trip. Against the Celtics, their coming back home hopefully shaking off the cobwebs to stand in even keel with the reigning champions.
The players to watch for Boston are usually the Big Three of Keviin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen but recently one player has turned out to be the catalyst of the Celtics renewed prowess of play.
Rajon Rondo has been racking up impressive numbers lately worthy of All-Star mention. Rondo has emerged as the next most important player outside of the Big Three. Exhibiting his capabilities on scoring by the bunches and piling up double-digit assists outputs certainly received a lot of positive feedbacks. Rondo may have been underestimated in his first year in the league, but now, he is showing to one and all what kind of a player he is on a championship caliber team.
The Lakers are known for their unquestionable firepower. With them leading the Western Conference by a mile away proves that their offense is without peer on their side of the league. Kobe Bryant is a constant. Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum are terrific frontline players and they also have great bench depth.
Both teams each has a rotation player missing in action. Boston's Glen Davis is currently recovering from a concussion he got from a vehicle accident while Jordan Farmar of the Lakers will be undergoing knee surgery. Despite those predicaments, those won't affect the game that much.
It sure is great that the Lakers-Celtics rivalry is high alive today for it is one of the most historic rivalries ever in the sport of basketball and served as the foundation of the NBA. This game is one great treat to all NBA fans all over the world. Happy holidays!
