Cavs, Magic Turns It Up After Slow Starts
November 10th 2008 01:50
The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic didn't actually enjoyed stong openings in their respective campaigns to kick off this season. But things are surely picking up for the two Eastern Conference playoff contenders.
It was just a matter of time before these two teams rack up winning streaks to prove their billing.
The Cavs went 1-2 at the start of the season losing their first two road games against Boston and New Orleans. Since then, the Cavs have gone 4-0 winning on the road at Dallas, won two straight home games against Chicago and Indiana, and finally, dominated the Bulls again on the road.
Cleveland is just within striking distance of the Detroit Pistons at the top of the Central division.
Lebron James is on a scoring tear averaging 34.5ppg in the last four games. The highlight is the two 41 point games that he had both against the Chicago Bulls.
For the Cavs, its all about James dominating ball games. It's very important that he stays healthy all season because we don't see much reason for Cleveland to succeed without Lebron. Where goes Lebron so goes the Cavs.
It is always a given that Lebron James will be a consistent player for Cleveland. The question is how his supporting cast will perform at a nightly basis.
The Magic opened the season at 0-2 losing to current Southeast division leader Atlanta and that freakish loss to Memphis. Things were much better after that.
Dwight Howard and company was back at home and they played there the whole week and was unsurprisingly victorious going 4-0 against Sacramento, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington. They are now second to Atlanta in their division.
Howard has been playing like the monster that he is with 24ppg, 13.25rpg, 4bpg and 2apg in those four wins.
So far, Stan Van Gundy's plan to spread the floor with efficient perimeter shooting is continously making wonders especially for Howard who looks very comfortable lately in operating on the low blocks.
Orlando was able to get back on the saddle because of a very advantageous schedule. Now that they are back on track, the Magic should build up their momentum before they head into tougher games.
