When in Rome, the 'Big 3' for Boston Kick Ass.
October 7th 2007 12:06
The new version of the Celtics ‘Big 3’ has begun, and it was a winning start for the men in green.
Boston faced the Toronto Raptors in Rome, and Kevin Garnett displayed his awesome game for the Romans to see, with a superb 19 point and 16 rebound effort. Paul Pierce the old Celtic stalwart added another 21 points, while Ray Allen had an off night with 10.
Toronto’s star Italian, Andrea Bargnani, who was last year’s number one pick, had a hot shooting night, scoring 13 points in less than 15 minutes, but it was to little avail. The Raptors lost 89-85.
However, the big Italian Stallion was what everyone wanted to see, marking his first appearance in an NBA uniform in front of his home crowd. The Roman crowd thought they were back at the Coliseum when Caesar was running the show in the manner they were cheering, Bargnani. When, Andrea hit six of Toronto’s first eight points they became delusional! It was like a gladiator slaying some lions and Christians.
Paul Pierce summed up the excitement that not only he was feeling, but the rest of the basketball loving public, at how these Celtics will pan out with so many marquee names on one team: "It was good to finally get out there and get our feet wet," Pierce said. "It was probably the best first game since I've been with the Celtics." (Dampf, AP, 2007)
It was a nice start to the preseason shenanigans for both teams, tuning up for things to come. Boston’s performance today just sates our appetites even more when the games actually have some meaning at what this team can really accomplish.
In other NBA debuts, Yi Jianlian, the much hyped rookie from China participated in his first open scrimmage today with the Milwaukee Bucks and had 10 points and five rebounds. Clearly, the biggest highlight for the young, or not so young, Yi, was his half-court heave that managed to tickle the bottom of the net.
Yi was obviously the main focus for the Milwaukee faithful who was cheering everything the man was doing. He could have done a number two in mid-court and they probably would have given him a standing ovation.
Milwaukee’s gun recruit appeared to be a tad, bit, sluggish after all the heavy practice and travelling he has had to do recently, but he got his groove on in the fourth quarter when scored seven points.
Like the Celtics, all NBA fans are eagerly anticipating the for real start for Yi to see how he really measures up.
Let’s bring on the NBA season!
