All-Star Weekend Participants for the Rookie Game and Skills Challenge have been Announced.
February 1st 2007 13:05
The All-Star Weekend is just around the corner and here at NBALOUD
this writer couldn’t be more excited because it’s not only in the city of sin, but it really is just one massive excuse for a party. The actual All-Star game is arguably the least exciting part of the weekend with the most memorable moments happening in earlier events such as the slam dunk, 3-point and skills competitions. Oh, we shouldn’t forget the rookies versus sophomores contest which usually has more intensity than the actual factual game.
All-Star game reserves will be announced any moment now and these players are voted in by the head coaches of the league, while invariably causing controversy in the ‘who got snubbed’ analysis. Before this though the rookie game and skills challenge participants have been named! Excited? No. Well, get excited damnit!
This season’s number one pick Andrea Bargnani and last year’s top draft choice Andrew Bogut headline their respective squads and the young guns should put on quite a show.
Any rookies or second year players that are also picked for the main All-Star game will have a busy weekend ahead of them because they’ll also have to participate in the ‘Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam’.
Perhaps the most viewer friendly aspect of this contest is that fans get to vote for the game MVP.
Rosters for the Rookie & Youth Jam Challenge
Rookies:
Andrea Bargnani, Jordan Farmar, Randy Foye, Jorge Garbajosa, Rudy Gay, Paul Millsap, Adam Morrison, Brandon Roy, Marcus Williams.
Sophomores:
Andrew Bogut, Andrew Bynum, Monta Ellis, Raymond Felton, Danny Granger, Luther Head, David Lee, Chris Paul, Deron Williams.
NBALOUD predicts the second year players stomping all over the rookies with Deron Williams taking out game MVP honours.
The field has also been set for the skills challenge and we’re talking about a seriously glamorous bunch of participants here. The 3-point shootout and the slam dunk competitions are historically the marquee events for All-Star Saturday but since its inception the skills challenge has had some marquee names. Don’t believe me? Try these names on for size: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Steve Nash and Dwayne Wade. These guys are NBA A-Listers!
Players in the skills challenge will be tested on their dribbling, shooting and passing attributes in an obstacle course with the winner having the fastest times. The course is deceptively simple looking and the players usually have the tools to finish this course without sweating in practice. However, in competition, during the All-Star game it is a different matter altogether.
For an idea as to what the whole All-Star weekend encompasses please, please, please check out this clip from last year’s weekend that has highlights of all the events.
