2008 NBA-All Star Weekend Re-Cap.

February 18th 2008 07:45
Whoa, Nelly! What an exhibition of basketball talent this year’s All-Star Game was – it was a mid-season classic in every sense of the word. The Eastern
Dwight Howard Superman dunk.

Conference All-Stars pipped their more illustrious Western Conference brethren, 134-128.

Not only were the East, beasts, but they outperformed their opponents in every facet of the game – from the fundamentals to the highlights. It was an experience to savour.

As exciting as the game was – the conclusion was something else, as LeBron James went Scarface on the West. Reminiscent of his destruction of the Detroit Pistons from a season ago, King James literally rose up to the heavens in the final minute and finished with a dunk that was of such viciousness – Hell has frozen over. To cap off his final minute heroics, Bron-Bron added 27 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

James got a lot of help from Boston’s Ray Allen, who was a last minute inclusion to the All-Star proceedings, and didn’t he earn it with a 28 point performance? It was an almost inconceivable injustice that Ray-Ray was originally overlooked for the game when his other gangsta teammates were selected.

With today’s exciting victory, the East went a long way in erasing the pasting they got last season when the West beat them handsomely, 153-132.

Do we need to state the bleeding obvious at who received the game MVP nod? Does it need to be spelled out for the world to see? Well, if you do deem it necessary: Gimme an L-E-B-R-O-N…what does it spell? Tuna? No, LeBron!

Although, today’s game was the jewel in the All-Star Weekend crown, Saturday night was also pretty righteous with the skills, 3-point, and dunk competitions to wet the whistles of NBA fanatics.

Starting off with the skills, Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz was the fastest man around the obstacle course, while Jason Kapono showed everyone that he was the fastest gun in the, er, West? Well, let’s stick with that and move along shall we? Jason Kapono was the silkiest shooter when he tied a 22 year old record by scoring 25 points in the final round of the 3-point contest.

However, it is dunks that you’re all interested in – and this year’s contest didn’t disappoint. Continuing with a mini revival of the dunk contest, this year’s version was no exception in the display of innovation from the competitors. Writing a description on each individual dunk would not do the players justice. So, in summary: Dwight Howard won it all – gaining some justice when he was robbed of the title last year.

Today’s video is of the dunk contest. Enjoy.

The All-Star Game starters have been announced and there was one massive surprise out west – Allen Iverson nabbed one of the starting guard positions! Well, done AI.

Boston Celtics forward, Kevin Garnett led the voting with 2,399,148. KG, participating in his

11th straight mid-season classic, will for the first time suit up for the Eastern Conference. Following Garnett in vote numbers is LeBron James, with first time starter Dwight Howard, Nets guard, Jason Kidd and Dwayne Wade rounding off the rest of the leading lights out east.

Wade’s participation in New Orleans follows a trend that has been evident in every All-Star Game: a player who balls for a horrendous team still gets a place as a starter. Miami are having a forgettable season, with the game a respite from the grind of constant humiliation: "It'll be the first enjoyment in a while," Wade said. "Being an All-Star, it's amazing to be there with the other great players around the league. It's a special weekend. Everyone makes you feel so special. It'll be great, and it totally takes your mind off your season." (Mahoney, AP, 2008)

Congratulations must go out to Jason Kidd too who makes his first starting appearance out east since moving to that side of America in 2001. Finally, the fans had recognised the ill skillz the man possesses.

Moving onto the Western Conference, Kobe Bryant was the leading vote getter, with the ever present Yao Ming and Tim Duncan joining the Bean, and of course the aforementioned, Allen Iverson who got the numbers after a late surge in votes, overtaking Tracy McGrady along the way. When the final update was released two weeks ago, Iverson was 80, 000 votes behind T-Mac, and ended up beating the Rockets guard by 10, 410 votes when it was all said and done.

AI will be joined in the starting line-up with fellow Denver Nugget, Carmelo Anthony, who also got the approval of the fans. This marks the first time two players from the Nuggets had been voted by the fans as starters since Alex English and Fat Lever accomplished the feat many moons ago.

Congrats to the All-Star starters. Here are the final numbers.

A combination of living my own hoop dreams today, and a 4.30am bedtime due to Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis’ epic tennis match has robbed this writer the will to post something substantial. So, we here at NBALOUD are entitled to publish the occasional fluff piece.

Today’s post will focus on classic commercials featuring NBA players. Ah, some wonderful gems here.

Kicking things off is a commercial for a sneaker brand with a pump on its tongue. When this certain shoe first came on the market it caused quite a stir in the playgrounds – we wanted these shoes big time.

This ad is kickass because it features basketball luminaries such as Dominique Wilkins and Danny Ainge to name a couple players popping up in this ad.

Everyone would be familiar with the ‘I want to be like, Mike’ jingo for a sports drink company. It was immensely famous and popular. We had that ad here in Australia, but this other one for the same company is new for this writer at least.

Featuring Michael Jordan and woman’s soccer icon, Mia Hamm, this commercial is cute.

The final ad for today features Shaquille O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon spruiking fast food. We can tell over the years that the Diesel has indulged in some unhealthy eating habits. Maybe his downfall began with this commercial?

LeBron James, Jay-Z and Beyonce celebrate LeBron's 23rd birthday.
Shades are needed to look at this picture because of all the star power on display. (Image from stereohyped.com)

So, how does arguably the most famous current basketball player on the planet celebrate his 23rd birthday? Well, if your name is LeBron James, you’d celebrate at the new 40/40 club of arguably the most famous hip-hop artist in the world, Jay-Z. In a star studded affair, the King had a basketball bash fit for the air apparent. Ah, the joys of celebrity hobnobbing.

Now, that we have covered the more vapid aspects of basketball, how about some on-court news? The New Jersey Nets are currently in a deep funk and it’s not the type of funk associated with Dr. J. More directly, the Nets just plain suck. Call in Tony Soprano to throw his metaphoric weight around because his home team is swimming with the fishes.

Jersey fans are naturally getting restless and are demanding any type of action to alleviate the pain for the Nets. The Jersey faithful want a miracle that bought in Vince Carter, or the lopsided trade that had Jason Kidd wearing their colours.

Kidd, the brightest star for the Nets, has regularly been touted as potential trade bait with the latest murmurings suggesting that Allen Iverson’s name had been thrown into the mix. A league source that has been privy to the discussions dropped the bombshell.

However, New Jersey apparently weren’t interested in that trade scenario.

Rod Thorn, the president of the Nets wants a star calibre player in return for Kidd, and desires a big man that could play with the star point guard. Pau Gasol had been in the Nets crosshairs but the Memphis Grizzlies aren’t interested in veterans.

We’ll finish today’s posting with the biggest news of all – Michael Jordan has made a basketball comeback with the Charlotte Bobcats – of sorts. His Airness who holds a front office position with the Cats joined in a practice scrimmage recently, with his players acting like star struck kids rather than multi-millionaire, professional ballers.

Players were giddy with joy that they got to play with, or against, MJ with Jason Richardson saying that it was such a pleasure to stop the man: “I will take that for a long time, blocking the shot of one of the greatest players ever…” (Olivieri, PA Sports Ticker, 2008)

The Cats used Jordan’s presence as inspiration with Nazr Mohammed basically summing up the general consensus of all Charlotte players. “You're talking about the greatest player to touch a basketball…So, it's always great to get a chance to see the things he does and the way he approaches the game.” (Olivieri, PA Sports Ticker, 2008)

Sadly, for the Cats His Airness can’t suit up for them on a regular basis.

Today’s video is of the top 10 facial dunks of 2007. Enjoy.

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted stuff on great Michael Jordan moments, so, what better time than now to write about another legendary tale in regards to MJ.

Now, the moments that have been covered so far are easily the more recognisable ones, but one favourite tale of this writer is little known outside the fanatical basketball world. Yes, we’re speaking in relative terms because this concerns His Airness, but generally speaking, this one is gold!

Has anyone ever heard of a former Washington Bullets player named LaBradford Smith? Hands up, any readers out there? Oh, put your hands down if you’re related to Smith, or are friends of the former Washington player. No?

Well, allow this writer to relate a tale involving MJ and Smith which is both hilarious and illustrative of the almost fanatical will to win from Jordan.

During the 1993 season, the Bulls were playing against the Bullets and Mike was guarding a

little known player called LaBradford Smith. This young upstart managed to drop 37 on Jordan and one could easily assume that His Airness was taking a night off defensively because he was a monster at stopping opposing players. Or, maybe Smith was just greater than Jordan, depends how you want to look at it.

The game is close and the Bulls won, but Jordan is furious that Smith had the temerity to embarrass the greatest like that. Even the win wasn’t enough to appease Jordan’s fury, and by a quirk of the scheduling the two teams would meet again the next night!

After the game MJ vowed to teammates that he was going to get back all 37 points Smith dropped on him by the first half!

Adding a further flapping red cape in front of the angry Bull, Jordan claimed that Smith also taunted him after his seminal performance with the words: “Nice game, Mike.” Telling all who would listen that LaBradford trashed him.

Everybody believed Jordan, the Bullets and Bulls players, while Smith never denied the fact that he taunted him. The legend grew with Washington players passing on the tale at how LaBradford zinged the greatest basketball player of all time.

So, the scene was set the next night when the two combatants would face each other again and Jordan was almost true to his word – he ‘only’ scored 36 points in the first half, with a jumper rimming out as the second quarter came to an end.

Want to know the best part of this tale? Are you ready for the twist at the end of the story? Jordan made up the fact that Smith had trashed him, in fact Smith never said a word, but MJ needed further inspiration to school LaBradford so told everyone that he was disrespected. Amazing.

Today’s video is of MJ lighting up Smith for 36 in the first half.

The 1992 version of Team USA featuring the names of Michael
Dream Team 2007.

Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen is widely regarded as the greatest collection of basketball talent in one squad. Hell, they’re the benchmark that every American team has been measured up against since, with each subsequent unit falling either just short, or miserably short in regards to the standard the ‘92 team set.

Team USA reached a nadir in the last Olympics when coach Larry Brown treated his team with disdain, believing he was the most important component, whilst letting the woefully under-prepared players be run by Stephon Marbury of all people. It was a team that couldn’t shoot, or had any sense of basketball acumen in regards to international basketball. So, not surprisingly they got their millionaire asses handed on a platter.

Well, the 2002 World Championship version of Team USA was pretty awful too with the team finishing sixth, behind New Zealand!

Anyway, the point is that the American national team, which used to be the most feared basketball squad on the planet, could no longer win by reputation alone. They had to step up and play international ball.

This brings us to the current USA squad, which has some semblance of consistency because each player in the team had to make a three year commitment to the national cause. Not only that, the present incarnation of Team USA has some rhyme and reason as to their make-up. Players such as Michael Redd who can spread the court with his accurate shooting, or Carmelo Anthony who has proven to be a beast for international play are planned parts all working to a grand goal.

It is however, Jason Kidd and Kobe Bryant who are the undisputed leaders of the team, while also being the hardest workers. Kidd and the Bean set the standard, and everyone else has followed suit.

The result? Team USA thumping all-comers in the Olympic qualifying tournament recently, which has led to basketball watchers stating that this team may be even better than the original Dream Team!

Whoa, Nelly! Huge call there and this writer can hear all readers choking on their lunch with that statement.

Now, hear me out as to why the current Team USA has the potential to be better than the 1992 team.

On a purely athletic measure this team has probably got it all over the original Dream Team. Yes, His Airness, David Robinson, Clyde ‘the Glide’ Drexler and Pip were wonderful sportsmen, but LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade just to name a
Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.
Give me some shades because the star power in this photo is blinding me! (Leifer/NBAE via Getty Images)
few, conjure up frightening images for international coaches. Not only are they big and strong, but can more than hold their own on the perimeter against much smaller players.

Don’t believe me? Ask, Rod Thorn, general manager of the New Jersey Nets and was the committee member for the 1992 team: “Athletically, I don't know that we've had a team more athletic than this team. That team had some of the icons in the history of basketball on it, so you know, it's tough to compare until this team goes on in Beijing.” (Sheridan, ESPN.com, 2007)

This current U.S. team is also much younger than their Dream Team brethren, and with the exception of Jason Kidd, are either in the beginning or middle of their basketball careers with the potential to really become icons.

Perhaps the only area this current team is lacking would be down the middle with Patrick Ewing and David Robinson really enforcing things down low in ’92.

Anyway, the only true measure of how good this team really is will come next year in Beijing. Argentina and Brazil were nowhere near as strong as they should be in 2008, while the USA hasn’t even played any of the European superpowers yet.

But take note that there is another Dream Team looming on the basketball horizon.

Today’s video is a highlight clip of the ’92 Team USA squad. Admire the basketball brilliance. Unfortunately no image of Charles Barkley elbowing skinny Angolan players on this highlight reel.

Michael Jordan has been in the public consciousness for so long now that it is hard to imagine a time when His Airness was a relatively unknown quantity. Believe it or not there was once a time when the name ‘Michael Jordan’ wasn’t on everyone’s lips but you certainly can’t keep a good baller down.

Coming out of high school MJ was a relatively lightly recruited prospect and although he would eventually break out in a big way during his first season at North Carolina, he was still the third wheel behind James ‘Big Game’ Worthy and Sam ‘Stoner Eyes’ Perkins.

Playing for legendary college coach and UNC God, Dean Smith, MJ was not only tutored by the best teacher there was, but combined with his natural competitive nature and skills, the only way was up for the skinny kid from North Carolina.

Coach Smith rarely played freshman, but His Airness proved to be one of the exceptions to the rule because the kid could straight up ball! Spectacular on the offensive end with his athletic play, MJ was quickly garnering the attention that was lacking when he was in high school. Hell, recruitment assessments of Jordan basically stated that he was an ‘average conference basketball player!’

Needless, to say the word ‘average’ and ‘basketball player’ haven’t been uttered in the same sentence since when talking about MJ.

Although, Jordan was busily carving a niche for himself, he really didn’t break out until the

The one and only time when MJ would share the number one pose with a fellow player. (Image from cnnsi.com)
championship game when the North Carolina Tar Heels faced off against the imposing Georgetown Hoyas who also had a legendary freshman of their own – Patrick Ewing.

The game was intense and close, with both teams fighting tooth and nail in trying to gain the upper hand. Hard to fathom now, but this was a massive game and Jordan wasn’t the main offensive choice, it was his teammate James Worthy who got all the plays called for him and why not? Big Game James had a massive 28 point haul on the way towards winning the tournament MVP award, whilst Jordan on the other hand had only 16 points.

But this game would ultimately be the first chapter of the Jordan legend and would forever be synonymous with Michael.

With 15 seconds remaining and the tough Georgetown defence clamping down on Worthy and UNC down by one point the ball was in MJ’s hands from 16 feet away.

Was Jordan going to pass? Don’t even trip – he shot it and it was nothing but the bottom of the net!

Georgetown had enough time for one last gasp victory but a bad pass from Hoya guard, Fred Brown was corralled by Worthy and the legend of Michael Jordan began in earnest.

He hasn’t looked back since.

We end today with the prophetic words of UNC assistant coach Eddie Fogler in regards to Jordan’s game winning basket: “The kid doesn't even realize it yet, but he's part of history now…People will remember that shot 25 years from now.” (Schwartz, ESPN.com)

Today’s video is of Michael Jordan during his days at UNC. Watch the cocky kid with his tongue out dominate in college.

Michael Jordan free throw line dunk.
Flight 23 takes off. (Image from nba.com)

It’s hard to believe now that the best part of the NBA All-Star weekend back in the day wasn’t the groupies, or partying it up in the VIP section of the hottest nightclubs in town – it was the slam dunk contest. In our recent nostalgia for the days of yore in the Association it is perhaps appropriate to look back at what generally was considered the greatest dunk contest in history back in 1988.

Vince Carter in 2000 may have put on the best individual show, but it was Dominique Wilkins and Michael Jordan who gave the fans the most breathtaking competitive display of dunking artistry.

Back in the 80s all the big names who had mad hops made the dunk contest the jewel in the All-Star weekend crown. Being the king of jams was a title with honour, and the ballers fought hard to be seen as the man with the maddest hops, with 1988 being no exception.

The marquee players were of course ‘Nique and MJ, but Clyde ‘The Glide’ Drexler and former champion Spud Webb also featured in this contest.

The setting could not have been anymore perfect for His Airness to claim the dunking crown – it was in his hometown of Chicago, he was having perhaps the best season ever as a pro, and he was about to put on a show that would go down in the annals of basketball folklore.

In the first round The Human Highlight Film came out elevating like he has never elevated before with a close to perfect score of 49 out of 50, while MJ was slightly less spectacular with a 47 point dunk.

Clyde ‘The Glide’ and Otis Smith made it into the second round but were subsequently eliminated, leaving the dream final of Wilkins and Jordan. Just imagine a jelly wrestling final involving Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel in bikinis and you’d get the picture at how pumped the
Dominique Wilkins dunk.
The Human Highlight Film flying through the air in 1988. (Image from newsday)
crowd was for this match-up.

‘Nique set the pace with his first dunk scoring a jaw dropping 50 with an out of this world jam. Mike followed suit and ‘bam’ he also achieved perfection.

Wilkins next dunk was a tomahawk jam that rocked the rim so hard that it shook the stadium, scoring yet another 50 point slam. The Human Highlight film lived up to his moniker and it was on like Donkey Kong. MJ tried to follow suit with a reverse dunk that only netted 47.

Mike was being upstaged in his own house by a man that was on fire. Something had to be done.

There was one dunk left and all ‘Nique needed was a 48 and he would be crowned the champ. But this was Chi-Town and Jordan owned this city.

The Human Highlight Film set up for another power jam that shook the rim, it was nice, it deserved more, but it only scored a 45. Credit to Wilkins who just shrugged it off, while hoping for a higher score.

You could feel the anticipation from the crowd as they came to the realisation what dunk MJ was attempting.

Jordan began measuring his steps and mentally trying to figure out where he should start his run up. His Airness was about to defy the laws of gravity and jam it from the free throw line!

Flight 23 ready for take off! This dunk had only been accomplished once before by the great Julius Erving in 1976! Was MJ capable of pulling off such a feat? The crowd held its breath.

Jordan was building momentum, he took flight, and…he missed! Ouch! The crowd were stunned: ‘Was this the end?’ They all seemed to be asking.

Not a chance. The rules stated that Jordan was allowed one last attempt.

His Airness was rattled and then he got some inspiration from Dr. J who as legend would have it yelled at Jordan to attempt the dunk again.

Inspired, Jordan went back to the middle of the court and took flight, and this time it was majestic. It seemed like an eternity he was up in the air and it was a sight to behold. It was beautiful.

50 points.

Perfection.

Today’s video is of the contest. Enjoy.

Kobe Bryant’s recent string of 50 point scoring nights has had a lot of
Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

NBA writers comparing him against another player that is similar in every facet of the game of basketball – Michael Jordan.

The Kobe vs. MJ debate has raged on since Bryant began establishing himself as perhaps the best player of his era. In all honesty this writer never gave the debate much thought until very recently. The reason being that NBALOUD has never entertained such a comparison because it was a no brainer – Jordan all the way.

Now, I’m not so sure.

Let’s begin with a caveat: Jordan is the greatest ever. End of this debate. Why? Six championships without a dominant big man, whilst playing in an era that included Magic, Bird and the great Pistons team.

No, what this post is interested in answering today is whether or not Kobe Bryant is the better basketball player. This is where things get murky.

Bryant is perhaps the most reviled player in the league right now and is hated as much as he is loved. Scratch that – he is the most loathed player in the NBA right now and admired by few.

NBALOUD has been guilty of Kobe bashing in the past as well but looking at this question objectively he has strong claims to being a better player than His Airness. This statement would be considered blasphemous to many people out there.

Well, now that this writer has gone out on a limb and stated that Kobe Bryant may be a better basketball player let’s analyse how this is so.

Both Kobe and MJ are freakishly athletic and are the most complete offensive weapons in the eras they inhabit. Steve Kerr in a recent column wrote that he believed that Bryant was a better ball handler and long range shooter than Jordan was and NBALOUD agrees.

Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
Who is the better baller? You decide. (Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)
During the dominant days of the Chicago Bulls people forget that the non-point guard that had most of the ball handling responsibilities was Scottie Pippen.

In terms of creativity and explosive athleticism both Michael and Kobe are virtually on par, but this era of NBA basketball has much more better athletes in comparison to Jordan’s era. That doesn’t translate though to players being better basketball players though because ballers in this period are fundamentally lousy.

Jordan was a fierce defensive presence but as Jemele Hill points out in her recent article for ESPN.com was equally assisted by the very much underrated Scottie Pippen who is a much better version of LeBron James. Pippen was a defensive beast and Kobe is cut from a similar mould. Bryant takes pride in his defence and being named as a member of the All-Defensive team in four years is no mean feat for a perimeter player when the rules are written as such to assist offensive players by any means possible.

Hill also makes a valid point that Kobe hasn’t acquired the individual awards that MJ has and her explanation as to the reasoning why is as sound as any explanation – blind hatred for Bryant.

Detractors of Bryant don’t so much critique Kobe’s basketball prowess but rather love to take him down a peg vis-à-vis his off-court behaviour. True, Kobe has been far from a saint on-court as well but does everyone forget that Jordan once got violent with Reggie Miller on court? That he has allegedly punched teammates during practice and was so universally disliked during his time with Washington that his teammates were happy to see the back of him?

This doesn’t include the various other transgressions that MJ has committed but gets a pass on because of his iconic stature not only within the game but in popular culture. He is synonymous with NBA basketball on a global scale.

Today’s posting is just another side of the Kobe vs. MJ debate that will never be definitely settled. Knowing NBALOUD’s erratic nature this space is probably going to dedicate a posting in the not too distant future as to why Jordan is better than Kobe.

In tribute to Scottie Pippen here is a video of the top 10 career dunks from the man himself.
