Have you always fantasised competing in the NBA All-Star Weekend dunk contest but never had the hops? Want to be immortalised, and mentioned, in the same breath as Julius Erving, Dominique Wilkins, or Michael Jordan? Well, with Rudy Gay’s help, you
can leave a mark on the dunk contest next month.
The Memphis Grizzlies forward has begun an internet campaign on YouTube urging the public to submit their ideas on what dunk should be attempted by Gay, with a video demonstration from the public. Gay will judge which dunks are the best, and will use it in New Orleans. What a great idea Rudy!
"I am really excited about this unique opportunity to engage the basketball community and create some additional excitement for the Slam Dunk competition,'' Gay said in a statement. "I am looking forward to seeing what dunks are submitted and will be selecting one that is creative and will excite the crowd during the competition.'' (SI.com, 2008)
Rudy is a fantastic leaper and whatever you, Joe and Jane Public can dream up, he’ll be able to do it. This stunt from Gay is bringing the sexy back to an un-sexy event. Back in the 80s when MJ and the Human Highlight Film ruled the skies, the dunk contest was the jewel in the All-Star Weekend crown – now, it is an afterthought. However, Gay is trying to pump up (in a non-Reebok way) the event once again.
So, from Melbourne to Madrid, and everywhere else in between, get out your digital cameras, lower that rim, and let your imagination run free. Everybody get dunk-a-licious!
